Allergies are surprisingly common – many people have seasonal allergies to pollen and dust (especially in springtime). However, there are more serious implications for people with pet allergies which make deciding between your health and pet a very difficult choice. An estimated 10% of people suffer from pet allergies, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe (including nose and sinus congestion, shortness of breath, or even rashes after spending time with their pets).

No one is allergic to his or her pet. However, you may be allergic to pet dander (skin cells), saliva, urine or fecal matter.  It means that any time they come into contact with the allergen; their body will naturally react and cause them to display specific symptoms. In some kids, it might be something mild like the development of a rash, while in others, the symptoms might be more severe.

If you have noted that you seem to display these symptoms after handling your pet, then you may need to keep a journal of your symptoms. Monitor how you feel before and after dealing interacting with your pet to determine whether that is definitely the root of your symptoms.

Dealing with Pet Allergies Head-On

When dealing with an allergic reaction, the best solution is to stay away from the offending allergens. However, rehoming your pet might not be something you are comfortable doing. Therefore, before making this big decision, you should consult with a doctor, they can determine the exact allergen using a skin prick or skin scratch test.

The treatment of allergies can be in different ways.  Mainly, the allergy specialist will recommend some prescription drugs or allergen immunotherapy. The second option will involve the administering of allergy shots, and this option provides long-term relief. The choice they select will depend on the severity of your reactions to allergens.

As previously mentioned, the only foolproof way to avoid contact with a pet-related allergen is to remove pets from your home. However, even in this case, your home may still take up to six months before it can be declared allergen free. Additionally, rehoming your pet might be traumatic for both you and your pet.

Here are some things you can do to keep your pet and minimize exposure to the allergens:

  1. Try to keep pets off of chairs and other carpeted surfaces in the house. It is crucial because upholstery (carpets and chair covers are like magnets for pet dander). Additionally, make it clear that pets are not allowed into your bedroom.

  1. Deep clean your carpets and chairs regularly. While you should vacuum your home at least every week, you also need to deep-clean your upholstery at least once a month.

  1. Wash your hands (or shower and change your clothes depending on the severity of the allergy) after playing with your pet.

If you plan to keep your pet, you will need to invest in a high-quality vacuum cleaner and air purifier. According to ByPurify.com, with the best vacuum for pet hair, you will be able to remove dander and other allergens from your home efficiently.

Additionally, using one of the best air purifiers for allergies will then work to minimize the contaminants that may be in the air. By taking all these measures, you will give your child the chance to play and spend time with their pets, without having to worry about them having severe or life-threatening allergic reactions.
