Does your doggo have fussy eating habits? It could be more than just walking away from the bowl head held high. There could be health issues to be concerned about. If you notice that your dog develops some serious symptoms after eating one brand of food, it is time for a change. I suggest you get on the phone with your Vet right away to talk about your pup’s diet.
Take it from us. We have battled food and environmental allergies with Ryder for years now. Save yourself the heartache and your pup the pain. Look at their food’s list of ingredients and try to determine what causes their reaction.
Keep a diary of all the symptoms your dog experiences. Make sure you note times of meals. And even outdoor play times. This will help you decipher what is causing the reactions. It could be environmental elements. Or it could be diet. Today we are going to talk about the top five most common culprits of dog food allergies.
Please note to always talk to your vet before changing any of your dog’s diet.
Raw Beef
Some dogs are simply not used to that much protein and can develop an allergic reaction to raw beef. Most dog food is made of chicken and turkey. If you have recently changed your pet’s diet to beef, you might want to think about switching again. Your dog is not likely to dislike beef, but – if you feed them too much – they might develop an intolerance that will cause all types of digestive issues you will have to deal with.
Dairy
Just like humans, some dogs are also lactose intolerant. Even a bit of cheese can cause several problems, including vomiting and diarrhea. If you suspect that your dog has eaten something that contains milk and would like to read more about the symptoms and treatments, you should visit some of the expert sites. Your vet will also be able to conduct a blood test if you are in doubt.
Eggs
Some dogs simply react to eggs (the yolk) badly. They can get constipated or hyperactive, maybe vomit and get weak. It is important that you check the ingredients of your dog food, and avoid eggs as much as possible. This includes pasta dishes your dog loves. Keep it on your plate, and make sure that you choose a quality dog food that has all the nutrients and vitamins your friend needs instead.
Soy
Soy is another common allergen among dogs. You might not think that pets can have allergies, too, but their digestive system is pretty similar to ours. You should go for natural and organic ingredients. A good replacement for soy is sweet potatoes, which is safe and has all the carbohydrates and minerals your dog needs to stay happy and healthy.
Rice
Some dog food contains rice instead of grains, and this can cause wind and indigestion. Some manufacturers use brown rice with the starch, which is hard for dogs to digest. While the more processed the food is, the more likely it is to cause indigestion and food allergies, you can simply cut grains altogether, so you can see whether or not your dog’s digestion will improve.
Just like humans, dogs can develop food intolerance. The most common breeds that suffer this condition are Boxer, German Shepherd, Shar-Pei, and Retrievers. It is important that – if you suspect that your dog has a food allergy – you keep a diary and check the list of ingredients on the bag, so you can identify the cause and avoid allergens.
